A private equity predator named Apollo Global Management recently fleeced a New York county for $1.4 billion in “job-creation” subsidies for a sprawling data center that will – get this – employ only 125 people.
Thanks for the information and the link, Jim. We'd also like to encourage everyone not to depend entirely on your congresspersons. Go local and petition your state and county representatives. They tend be be at home, instead of in D.C., and they will listen.
And Republicans and sadly some Democrats can't turn over to Billionaires fast enough. Plus always using "job-creation", as we destroy you, BS to justify it. All the while stuffing their pockets and leaving, eventually, the whole place in ruins. "Boom, Bust, Quit" from "Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism" by George Monbiot and Peter Hutchison. And guess why Private Equity Predator Jared Kushner is all over the place???? MONEY - their God! The Billionaires are busy Fleecing everyone everywhere...... "Burned By Billionaires: How Concentrated Wealth and Power are Ruining Our Lives and Planet" by Chuck Collins. And they will NOT stop until they are STOPPED! The Seconded Gilded Age is alive and on full roar consuming all of us as fast as they can with no end it sight........until and unless we act and shut them down! Teddy Roosevelt did, now it is our turn!!!
Thanks for your focus on this obscenity. Here in New Mexico people are fighting a proposed mega data center near Las Cruces called "Project Jupiter". The quantity of water and electrical power they would need and how we would suffer because of this is being made clear despite a huge TV advertising campaign they are promoting.
Jim - Thank you. I am merely parroting the comments by the Hollisters and MS Troy. I would not have known about https://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/ but for your column and do intend to donate. I read Robert Reich's column regularly and, with your permission, would like to post a link to this column.
Ameriica’s crop & livestock production is about 550 billion dollars! Social Security benefits disbursed are about 1,25 trillion annually! Pass the Social Security Expansion Act! Brian. 612-554-9733
11 million per job doesn't quite top the 15 million per job that a Mississippi town paid in a lowdown issue from years ago but America still sucks at fuzzy math. Bush's social security "plan " never should have made it as far as the presidential debate. After Al Gore laid out the math on how much the plan would take from the social security fund Bush said " there you go with fuzzy math " .I screamed at the tv. Telling Gore to ask what was Bush's figures but Gore sat there looking as stumped as the bottom part of a fallen tree. My dentist appointment was days after I wrote about this to the local paper. He said because he made more than I he would be able to invest thousands over my $26 . I reminded him that the cap on s.s. tax was $89.000 so the most anyone could invest in the "plan" is just over $100 dollars. The secretary heard the conversation and did the fuzzy math, I was thousands closer to the truth even though my dentist usually uses his head better but he sucks at fuzzy math just like that county in N.Y.
Thanks Jim. Good info as always. So glad I decided to subscribe. Just look at what is going on with Anthropic and the Pentagon and the courts. Not exactly the same but it is based on one of the BIG problems with AI. We need to get control of this technology. None of these money grabbers can be trusted...nor can our military under this Administration...or maybe not with AI under any Administration. "Pandora's Box" sounds quaint as a warning for things that get out of control. With AI, things are out of control.
as far as our government - it is just smoke and mirrors! Just look at Chuck Shumer calling on Trump to finish the war in Iran. The war that the President does not have the constitutional power to start - but those cowardly Republicans and Democrats wanted!!!!
NO AI period Has anytone made a customer Service or Tech call for help? Absolutely horrendous .... Further, AI has yet to be proven 100% reliable, and finally, it breaks laws such as copyright. NO DATA CENTERS!!!
The infestation of smiling, winking, fast-talking, AI corporate hucksters looking to flim-flam rural America are the most dangerous yet. Not only do they threaten to steal away people's money and resources: They threaten to steal away their humanity.
It's kind of like trickle-down economics. They'd lead you to believe that it's for everybody's good. Well, it's inhumane. We all know how trickle-down economics has worked out.
Techno/kleptocrats and venture capitalists run amok! They are driven by avarice and the fiction that AI will remake humanity for the better and off course, "we don't want the Chinese to get ahead of us". They believe that the data center capacity they are pushing for will be necessary for winning their individual races, but chances are it won't be necessary in the long run. If it takes a little longer to realize AI's true potential and government and the people have greater involvement in charting its course, will that be such a bad thing for society. I don't think so, the only people who will be chaffing if we follow that path will be the techno/kleptocrats and the venture capitalists. Is keeping them satisfied really the core mission of our society?
It's hard for me to come up with my favorite Edward Abbey aphorism, but if somebody had a monkey wrench and threatened to hit me with it if I didn't spit it out, I'd say, "Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell."
I can’t understand Newsome. Instead of telling those predators who threatened to leave, “Good riddance. We did better without you, anyhow ,” he caved. He backed away. No. You have to call their bluff.

I second that. The local grassroots are the deepest.

and the military budget???? which again goes to the corporations that make death weapons.

This is incredibly useful information. Thank you 🙏

AND do we trust the information AI will provide? Answered by the fact we can not trust our government or corporations them now.

If Edward Abbey was still around, he could write one hell of a sequel.

It is like war makes the stock market go up! SICK.
I'd say that's just about the best example of 'The love of money is the root of all evil'... Blood money.

Dystopian.
You did not say which County in New York this happened. Was there a reason?
