Extending the Jesse Jackson Legacy

3

It’s been 35 years since Jesse Jackson’s landmark presidential campaign, and an important gathering of progressives is taking place in Chicago this weekend. In tribute to Jesse Jackson, in celebration of progressive advocacy—and as a call to re-energize Jackson’s democratic model of leadership. The Jackson family will be there, Bernie Sanders, too—and you can be there, via a Word Network cable broadcast and internet streaming.

Jesse Jackson has long been a primary influence in my political life, for he is a leader who actually leads. In 1988, it was an honor, an education and a joy for me to have been part of his remarkable, grassroots presidential campaign. Jackson’s candidacy was historic, not only because he was the first Black man to make a serious, nationwide run for president, but most significantly because he intentionally organized a multiracial, populist campaign. I believe that combination is key if progressives are to coalesce a governing majority in our country.

Here are the details for the event, for which I made the above video.
