Today’s majority hates the everyday arrogance, avarice, and abuse that corporate supremacy has unleashed on workers, consumers, local businesses, family farmers, the poor, the sick, the “different,” our environment… and democracy itself.
Trust us: GOP and MAGA can see the dark clouds on the horizon and hear the thunder. They are desperate, and it shows. Now to bring on the cleansing rain - keep on kicking! We may be closer than we think. One fighter we love and support: Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland. One D-pol we would like to kick out: Sen. Chuck Schumer. The best and the worst, in a nutshell.
Loathsome "centrist" (i.e. corporate D shill for econopathy) Schumer said this in 2016. "For every blue collar Dem we lose in western PA we'll pick up two moderate Rs in the suburbs of Philadelphia and you can repeat that for OH, IL, and WI." PA, OH, and WI are Rust Belt; rife with deaths of despair. (Real term; look it up.) These Ds and the party they dominate stand for nothing but retaining their own power. When primaryed in NYC, their resentment was so great they openly allied with the Rs, even getting an endorsement for Cuomo from Trump. This party dumped the New Deal and abandoned us, the majority working class. They've done nothing for us for over 40 years; it's no wonder the D line is so tarnished for all too many of us.
Because both parties are the same - they just support opening different corporations and all bow down to BiBi. As a former D and now an independent, call both parties out we do not trust big corporations and yet we quake in our boots when covid came along - we bowed down to fauci - the devil in a pope costume - who has been engineering bioweapons since AIDS - yes a bioweapon - along with Ebola, lime, and who knows what else - never fear they are trying to come up with a lime shot - how nice of them. Biden said he did not trust the covid shot and then once he got in - he mandated it for all he had control over - KING BIDEN - did we so soon forget - now we have increase circulatory system problems and turbo cancers - sorry to anyone suffering from any covid shot health conditions - but open your eyes. Many doctors who opposed the shots initially opposed only the covid shot to have their eyes open to the fact all shots are not effective and harmful. do not shake in your cowboy boots - cause we all get so upset that RFK is trying to offer medical freedom and not mandating any shots and even trying to get the covid shot off the market period. and if you dutifully got your umpteenth shot - they should be testing your body because you are a miracle. all this just to say watch aninconvientstudy.com and now go to peoplevspoison.org and take action. Hit the take action button - then call your congressman and read the script. It is short and to the point.
Absolutely! It’s time the Democrats make a stand and stand up to corporate America. WE are the government of the people by the people and for the people.
We're also in an 1800 moment when Thomas Jefferson and his supporters railed against the Federalists who favored an elected monarch instead of the legislature because they feared common people, not the kind of government they fought for 25 years earlier. Dems need to fully embrace the legislature as the people's house and against the autocrats and robber barons who turn a blind eye to tyranny so long as they are able to fleece everyone else.
Check with your local candidates and talk to them in person. Find out were they stand and if they are going to get tough and get to work on the problems we all face. And if they do NOT stand up and fight for the people (and big money backers who will then control them) they are supposed to represent.......get someone else. Get Tough or Get Out.....of the way. (Time to end the Billionaires Monopoly and Control over the politicians)
Moderate is a dumb thing to be. It certainly isn’t positive. It’s always used in contexts like “moderate to severe arthritis.” It qualifies only negative things, like “Moderate Republican.” The word is actually an apologizer.
We absolutely need to fight all the corporate greed with every bit of strength we can muster. We need to bring together all the various groups fighting the data centers, environmental ravaging, detention centers and all the other ways corporations are putting profits above people. There is strength in numbers. Unite and fight!
Fully agree, and especially pleased you included the disasterous detention centers where so much daily harm, and too often death, take place. In addition, you and I, and all of us, clearly know that AI Data Centers are the most obvious "death knell" to our independence, our rights, "Our Uniquely American, Secular, Constitutional Democracy."(my term) It is being rung so very quickly, and persistently, throughout our rural areas in every state. Good-bye electricity and drinking water. For all of us, our children, and our futures, we MUST STOP THEM. No choice.
Always a damning of our American sense of humanity, and especially in Trump's term(s) with so many incarcerated in such unforgivable, unconscionable conditions, with no recourse, no justice. Truly, violently, UN-American. Agreed also, why haven't we in America removed the death penalty? Human lives murdered by our governments, each committed to following the ancient "eye for and eye" immature mentality. No mature empathy. Deep shame is on us, and it won't go away.
We're way past the blame game - politics is out, accountability is the way out of our 250 yr route of resources - time for qualified representatives with affiliation to reality
Hi everybody. My internet was down for over a week. The inconvenience was awful, but the worst part was how I missed reading my favorite posts like The Lowdown, and all the readers' comments.
Now then, as for today's article about being moderate...
I believe that the seperation of business corporations and state is equally important if not more so than seperation of church and state in order to ensure a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. I suppose that Republicans and "corporate problem solver" Democrats would call me a radical extremist. To my way of thinking, corporate corruption of the government and big-money media manipulation of the American zeitgeist has shifted the idea of "moderate" so far to the right that it ought to have a new zip code.
WHO CONTROLS THE MEDIA??? BiBi? We get information from tucker, candace, george gallowar, gleengreenwald, corbettreport, theyoungturks, etc. and of course our JIm
These for-profit Corporations are a legalized fiction of non-responsibility sanctioned by another paperwork structure and powered by numbers of dollars. Numbers and imaginary numbers are infinite. Earth's natural resources and life supporting habitats are not. Seems to.me that this . administration is trying to break God's promise of life everlasting.
Fair warning: a lengthy post follows. My latest rant is about a reminder the organizer of my book club posted about an excellent book entitled Poverty, by America. He called it a 'polemic,' of which it is clearly not. Its chapters include clear analysis of reasons for poverty in the richest country in the world -- the USA -- with extensive, many academic, references included at the end of the book. It also includes two chapters of actions that could be taken to alleviate and end poverty in this country. I think the organizer of the book club, a usually thoughtful person, well-educated, too, revealed the depth of his liberalism with his post.
It seems to me that the book, which actually demonstrates -- with facts and examples of so-called 'anti-poverty' programs -- how most of us who are not poor, but especially the wealthiest among us, have benefited and continue to benefit from tax policies and those programs. I know that's not news to Hightower and many readers of the Lowdown. I think the book offends the 'sensibilities' of liberals and those who have not examined their privileges or the lack of privileges of many people in this country. Believing that individualism can save us all and benefit the 'have-nots' among us if they'd only work harder is exposed for the fraud it is in Poverty, by America.
The author, Matthew Desmond, Ph.D. , is professor of Sociology at Princeton, and a MacArthur Foundation Fellow (AKA, the 'genius award'). His previous book, Evicted, won many awards, well-deserved, I think, not least for me because not only did it include academic research, but the 'lived experience' of people who'd been evicted from their homes as well his experiences living among them. Poverty, by America, is well-written, uses academic research to support what he writes about the weaknesses and strengths of so-called 'anti-poverty' programs and, importantly, uses descriptions of people's lives to enrich academic findings. He also cites facts and figures, including how much -- and how little -- funding it would take to alleviate and even end poverty in the USA. I sincerely think that everyone who has commented on Hightower's posts could read and understand and comment on Desmond's books.
I often wonder how it is that elite academic institutions in this country manage to both hire and retain faculty who 'speak truth to power' and graduate alumni who work hard to achieve and maintain positions of power in this country.
Thanks for reading this post, if you got this far. I love reading all your posts, which give me hope.
Thanks for that important information. Academics who speak truth to power are admirable.
We only wish that their books were more widely known and available. This is where platforms like the Lowdown serve such a good purpose. Keep spreading the word!
i am going to get the book and read it. Again go to peoplevspoison.org take action and then watch the videos. they control us by what they put in our food, aid, and water. Glyphsate causes cancer. GMOs cause cancer - French scientist proved this decades ago and of course lost prestige as the corporations controlling scientific research denied this. TAKE ACTION. feed and give the people on the streets a few dollars.
The party of the people also need leadership that stands up to trumps insane agenda instead of playing dead until the political cartoonists and late night tv. Hosts display the insanity. I recently saw a rep. From California scream about people losing their Healthcare while we spend billions a day to bomb Iran and jack up the price of oil and everything else. I wish I had caught her name, I would like to thank her and give her a hug.
Homo Economicus is all about the flow of money. It says on the paper bills that each dollar is legal currency of the United States of America. Language makes humans different from other animal species. As long as people are looking only at $ signs when making environmental policies for living beings, the corporate paperwork structure and machines have US on the pathway to suicide. As long as the Gross National product is based on the harvested $ speak and economic formulas to funnel more, ever more millions, billions, trillions into the fascist/ communist take over of OUR oxygen producing life supporting habitat on Earth, we will soon suffocate in our own wastes as we're distracted by the antics of our unelected felon in the Oval Office of the White House. S.C.O.T.U.S. put him there after the failure of the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election to produce a winner and by giving him a get out of jail free card so he could act as king of the world. International Corporate World? Am l to understand that now our armed forces can subscribe online for personal conversations with the AI Jesus? Protect and preserve our National Parks and Federal Lands! Not for Sale or Lease! Call the Capitol Switchboard and just say no to the number speak gutting of our waters, land and air for the addiction of the city empires to the fossil fuel industry and electric utilities.
Right now Congress is working on clearing away the environmental protections so that our Old Growth and mature forests can be plundered by a South American Logging Corporation. Also the Roadless Area designation is about to be undone.

I appreciate your support for Jamie Raskin; his summer programs for training young people how to "do democracy" are vital.

In my view, Jamie Raskin's a people's Populist and Chuck Schumer's a billionaire's Corporatist. I reckon we see eye to eye, C&S.
Reckon we do, Ian. Don't you wish Hightower would run for high office??
I do wish Hightower would run for high office, with one condition: that the Lowdown would continue on.
Absolutely! It’s time the Democrats make a stand and stand up to corporate America. WE are the government of the people by the people and for the people.
As they say in Texas. “go big or go home.”
really?

Yes! Yes!
these detention centers have been here for decades - who is to blame?????

where can we get info?
sigh
Isn't there anything in the U.S. Constitution about how to dissolve a corporation and about why and when that must be done?
No, they're state charters. Explicitly to serve public good. Ah, the irony.
There was a time early in the history of corporations that they were only to be chartered if they served a public benefit and I believe that may still be the case in many states. My hope is to see this requirement pursued more vigorously by the states. Perhaps that public benefit should be clearer or should be in the form of higher taxes or lose their charter??
Interesting idea
what about anything that denies lobbyists? How do they get to have our legislatures ears and brains? Is there an answer for this
Amen!
Ah so!
