Greetings, Lowdowners! We got our hands on something special this week.

In October 1988 — twelve days before the presidential election — Hightower stood before the City Club of Portland, Oregon, stumping for Michael Dukakis. He was Texas Agriculture Commissioner and he’d just given a barnburner speech at the Democratic National Convention. As Hightower said to the crowd, you’re probably wondering what an agriculture commissioner has to say to a bunch of city folk, but: “If you eat, you’re involved in agriculture.”

It was wild to watch and hear how much of politics in 1988 mirrors what’s happening today, and that kind of thing tells me: We’ve fought it before, beat it back, and even made progess. We’ll keep fighting. Check these choice moments out:
