My wife and I extend our heartfelt condolences to you , to Texas, and to Our nation for your and our loss. Yes, we absolutely do need more of his character, dedication, and action. We do need to punch back against the current bullies - female as well as male - by doing it together. Together, Democratic Leaders, together. Get to know us. Talk with us, not at us. We're waiting.
I’m so sorry, Jim, so sorry that you lost your dear friend. And sorry for the country that we lost a mainstay, indeed. I will think of him and indeed I will try to emulate him when I spend time in my hometown of rural Lafayette, Wisconsin, just outside of Chippewa Falls. (Where yes, I went to high school with Judge Susan Crawford, a very nice, very smart person)
Thanks for highlighting Carlton Carl as a mainstay. As you say, we need more like him. As always, I appreciate your help in providing us with great information. I don't live in Texas, but have a son living Austin. It's good to know you are there looking out for everyone.
I never knew about Carlton, but if he spoke common sense wisdom to the people he was influential. Today's Democratic leaders and congresspeople need to do more to talk to the populous in a more honest and common sense way. Tell the public that with the US population growing over time, there will be more need for government services and help for those needing it and assistance. They need to use the analogy that if you buy a larger, more expensive home, but reduce your income, that formula does not work. That is exactly what this administration is doing. Giving big tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations at a time when we need additional revenue to cover a more expensive nation. Be honest that everyone with the ability to pay a little more should not object to that for the betterment of all of us to live better lives and aid those who need our help. Oh, sorry, that is being WOKE! My bad.
I believe my respect you show for him is because you are a "Hightower". "L. V. (Dugan) Hightower" is probably related to you (TX is a small state!). Coach Hightower was my high school football coach and Asst. Principal. He also taught me in Sunday School, First Baptist Church, Sugar Land, High School. Even then, and much more today some 60 years later, I revere this man.
Listen here you modest curmudgeon, If you don't think that just maybe perhaps, I'm just guessing somehow that if you don't stay healthy, we'll be saying that about you!
In my opinion, US Senator Bernard Sanders (l-VT) is exhibiting these fine qualities and would make an excellent intermediary U.S. President with Tim Walz, the Democratic Party Candidate for Vice President to represent the third of registered votes for him in 2024 and Vice President Vance to represent the Republican third. Senator Sanders can represent the third that didn't vote and we could restore a better balance of power.
I'd say RIP, but I'd bet he won't. His active populist spirit will keep blowing through Texas soil. Which, as you pointed out, is the first place where populism took root.
Thanks for this story. Mr. Carl should be remembered. And it's encouraging to know there are real people, real allies who aren't narcissistic billionaires, shallow influencers, or corporate lite Dems.

Another largely unsung hero, another voice of courage to remember and celebrate. Rest in peace, Carlton. We will carry on.
