I picked tomatoes with farmhands in San Diego area at age 10...I barely lasted an hour. I helped my aunt in the middle of the night drive a Mexican couple (they worked for her doing housework and helping with the care of her lemon grove) down into a nearby town where they climbed into the back of a pickup truck, were covered up, and drove off to heaven knows where. One summer when college age, I volunteered with a countrywide farmworkers support group....caring for kids while parents worked...planning post field work activities with braceros....learned all about treatment of farmworkers while in contact with "employers". Nothing has changed, even though Caesar Chavez was just coming into action. I'm turning 90 in a couple of months...I hope to live long enough to see the lives of these people made whole. Trump doesn't care about them at all.
Jim, reading your short articles, is like having a friend wake you up from a nightmare. Many thanks for being there in the truth and reality department. With the head psychotic running our country into the ground (it will be his 7th bankruptcy) and allergic to reality and truth, our access to true news is shrinking. Corporate agriculture has been bloating the bodies and poisoning the minds of Americans for a long, long time already and now this? We actually need to redistribute the money more fairly and limit overall wealth to something that can't afford to buy political influence. And ban lobbying totally, so we can hear our elected representatives pursuing the policies that are good for us citizens... and housing, health care, taxation, work, living wages, public education, human rights, racial equality, an increasingly chaotic and hot climate burning people in Phoenix, etc, etc. - rather than stupid, mean people ruining things.
“34 million able-bodied adults” are freeloading on public health care. Isn't this exactly the same stuff we heard almost 50 years ago from Ronald "let them eat cake" Reagan? Some things just keep getting recycled.
Hope they decide to live with that rather than risk "eat the rich." Rousseau said when there's nothing left, the poor will eat the rich. My suggestion is to combine enviro issues with nutrition for the world's starving millions: Soylent Green New Deal.

Any company whose payscales are so low that their employees have to supplement their income using government programs should get a monthly bill for the cost of those programs. If they don't provide health care the companies should have to reimburse the government for the cost of the Medicaid they use. AND, those payments should not be tax deductible for the companies. Perhaps they would be encouraged to raise wages and provide health care because those are tax deductible expenses. The added benefit would be dignified employees.
