What a wonderful bit of good news. Blasphemy is DJT dressing as the Pope; gathering at a community food stand with all God's children is definitely not. Our church, located in Dekalb County, GA, hosts a weekly Farmer's Market all through summer. We can attest to the blessings that it spreads. Rest in peace, Barry, and may your legacy grow and thrive!
We have a weekly farmer's market here in my Southern Michigan village, and thanks to you, I will now be a more frequent visitor. All of us who have a similar free market should probably help support this form of commerce, too. Thanks, Jim.
I am proud to say our metro transit company operates "fresh markets" at MARTA stations throughout Atlanta in areas that are in food deserts. Local fresh fruit and veggies for sale at the stations themselves.
This photograph was taken in a farmers market in a WIC clinic in San Antonio in October, 1988. Hightower's Texas Department of Agriculture received a grant from a private foundation to provide WIC participants coupons to use in local farmers markets. Healthy food for low-income moms and children and new sales for local farmers. The program became and permanent USDA program and now operates nationally. Another example of the great work Hightower does!
Here in Corrales, NM. our Grower's Market is held on Sunday starting at 9 AM. I thought folks came from town because its a reasonable hour. Now I know the real reason, which makes perfect sense! Its church! Fred and I always praised YOU, I'm for making this happen. Its great to know you stand on the shoulders of others. Praise be to founders, growers and lovers of fresh food. Its aa wonderful worship.
May Barry B's memory ever serve as a green, bountiful, People & Planet loving blessing. Reading his NYTimes illustrious obit, I'm shocked that I didn't know his name, as a born & bred Brooklynite who frequented many areas of Manhattan from c. 1957 through late 1997 when I relocated permanently to Tucson! Now I know to mourn the passing of a community-nurturing pioneer in the harsh NYC environment. And to celebrate his trailblazing that spread like, well, trees & other healthy plants, across this country hungry for non-corporate connection, authenticity, fresh produce. Of course Tucson has its own beautiful bounty of farmers' markets, many if not all days of the week, from Downtown outside the Main Library, to all across town in more residential areas. Though perhaps more of a showing may be good in historically Hispanic South Tucson......?
