Absolutely, the wealthy should give more to Social Security. The ceiling should be lifted. There should be no ceiling. Or, at least $2M. There should be no more talk of “ SSA is hoo going broke.” All people should contribute because all people are recipients. Be fare. Now, the tax is regressive and affects the working class the most.

Let's be in synch with Bernie Sanders' Pensions for All legislation, introduced in July, that would require Social Security tax on all income over $250,000 (this is a little different from simply lifting the ceiling - this leaves the income between $176,100 and $250,000 untaxed for Social Security). It is politically savvy to have the $250k threshold since the change would gain more support from all those whose income may be adequate-to-substantial but who are far removed from the billionaires. The billionaires would be much less able to claim that "the middle class" is being taxed higher. There would be plenty of money from the FICA tax on income over $250,000 especially if loopholes on taxable income can be removed.
Agree 100% as usual. I spent 50 years working and paying into Social Securiy, and, frankly, it shouldn't be within the power of the federal gov to rob me of my money.
Attire is the only things oligarchs change from one generation to the next. FDR joke that critics of Social Security want to throw old people on the trash heap like wrinkled rinds, and they haven't changed. They're gunning for Medicare, too. They must think all insurance and union retirement accounts are Ponzi schemes since they believe Social Security is one. We cannot let them get away with the lie. Civilization was never free. I would have been happy to pay my full share of Social Security when my wife and I made good money some years in our small business. We pretend to be retired these days, and Social Security is a big help, especially Medicare!
Without Medicare I would simply die. Even with two good social security deposits and a pension each month I would not have enough money to cover the medical expenses alone, much less to buy food or drive a car.
Millionaires and Billionaires have tons of money - but only one vote each. We have millions of voters with one vote each. Seems like we need a new way to help people understand to ignore the “money ads” and concentrate on VOTES - one at a time. Explain, explain, explain!!!
I believe a fervent, and well-regarded, master-class investing billionaire (Warren Buffett), believes that all of the top earners should pay at least the same proportionally, as the lowest paid person on their staff. We should take the 'ceiling' off SSA.
Please note: this will allow the US to build its own "sovereign wealth fund", as an additional benefit.
Absolutely, squared. Since when has socialism been a destructive way to govern? The obscenely rich can't possibly be so ignorant that they do not know this simple truth: democracies with a strong social safety net are far better off, and its people happier and more productive, than any system you can name. The billionaire class seems to think they can exploit this country and its people forever. They are shooting themselves in their corporate foot. One day, they will find that they rule a wasteland, much like the land of Mordor in the "Lord of the Rings". There will be no one left to steal from.
That’s the plan my friend. The wealthy will be living on other planets (they believe) after having this planet and population completely stripped of all value.
Ninety nine percent of the super rich are completely amoral. Add the money with the out of control egos, and no accountability and they are truly dangerous.
Well put, friend. But the key words are "they believe". All their combined wealth would not be enough to make Mars (or any planets in our solar system) livable in their preferred style. And even they know it. So they make the most of their opportunities to ravage Earth.
Thanks Jim, as a retired military NCO, and then a retired Texas teacher, making a lot of money has never been an option. But I am thankful for what we have and what we can share. I have been doing a lot of reading and researching on a group called The Patriotic Millionaires (https://patrioticmillionaires.org) . I was very skeptical at first. But they seem to have a very good tax plan and they are ALL IN on Millionaires paying their fair share of taxes. Maybe a place to start. Would help with a lot.
In total agreement with his view and proposed solution that should have been implemented at the beginning. Many average wage people have not earned enough to save for retirement as they sought to meet the expenses of raising a family with no government help- while wealthy were only paying less than 1% of their got income. Don’t buy into the line that they ere taxed at 94% of their income. That only applied to their higher part of income/salary - with much of it exempt as with Trump he could pay no taxes for 15 years or so. Did he ever make public his tax history? Just like keeping his involvement with Jeffry Epstein hidden-those women are entitled to justice for what they suffered, they are not seeking revenge- but only accountability so that that atrocity can’t continue without anyone being confronted for their crimes
It already feels unfair to those of us who've been paying into SS our entire working lives to have to pay tax on the little bit we get back. I never seemed to be able to move beyond the arbitrary ceiling put on income so I escaped paying in. I would not object to raising that ceiling substantially so those making hundreds of thousands a year would contribute their fair share.
Right wingers talk fiscal prudence until they get elected, then they spend our assets off and give us a bankrupt president. The folks used to say half the restaurants would go out of business without retirees. Without social security we would still lose a good percentage of restaurants. I feel blessed to have been born in a place and time where we have indoor plumbing, vaccinations against the worst disease, refrigeration, transportation and an economy that has allowed people and business to prosper. I was blessed with a pension and social security but now I have to pray I will be able to make it to medicare.we need an economy that benefits more than just the lucky 1 percent that can afford to buy the government.
Amen. Abolish the ceiling on Social Security taxes. If Tesla had to pay their half and E. Lon Muskrat had to pay his half of Social Security taxes on the entire amount of the Muskrat's annual compensation package, the Social Security Trust Fund would be fully funded for decades to come. So write or call you Senators and Congress-critter today. Demand an end to the ceiling on Social Security taxes.
My scintillating wife is younger than I am, incredibly brilliant and hard-working, and still in the work force. Her income permits me to use my social security payments for donations to groups which provide food and shelter to the indigent and to scholarships at my alma mater. Take that, Musk, you greedy so-and-so!

Correction: “SSA is going broke.”
Be fair. ( Sorry for the mistakes. In a hurry to post. )

When we fail to proofread our publications, the errorists win.

Taxes should be an equal burden for everyone, regardless of income, regardless of how rich or poor.

The wealthy have NO desire to be fair. They just want more wealth at the expense of the “serf class” , which is the rest of us That’s the plan.

Or much like Mars
A dead planet
Nobody says it as straight as Hightower. 👏
