Jim, thank you for passing on this information and the links we need. Living in a largely rural state (Georgia), we have been flabbergasted at the way the GOP (Greedy Old Party) is treating the people who work hard to feed us. It is beyond corrupt and cruel: it is downright stupid. It hurts even the big shots in the end, by choking off an income stream that enables people to spend money on anything - including groceries. Voters are already waking up to this. More of the same, please!
GT is my congresscritter and we protest regularly outside the office nearby -- the one that no one has ever seen him in. But at least it has a local phone # so it's easy to call and submit a negative review of his actions.
The Republicans in America and the Republican members of Congress are ONLY interested in helping the BIG Agricultural Companies, the BIG Farmers, and the Billionaires - period. Because for the Republicans it equals BIG MONEY for them. They do NOT give a DAMN about the average American or small farmers or small towns. They only USE the average Americans for votes and then turn around and SCREW them, but tell them it is others who hurt them, when it is the Republicans that are hurting them ALL THE TIME!!!! Don't believe it? Take a trip around America and look at what is happening to small town America. Empty store fronts, populations on the decline, fewer and fewer services (and thanks to DOGE even less every day), doctor and hospital further and further away, little to no grocery stores, etc. And guess what? Most of RURAL America is represented by Republicans - who are screwing the very people they are "supposed" to be representing - in favor of - wait for it - TAX CUTS FOR BILLIONAIRES!!!!!!
Seems to me those megacorporzillas chomping their way through our land and water resources while stomping on family farms just might be a big problem. Doing away with programs where locally grown food is made available for local people in need is a big clue whom the DC stable boys serve. They're about feeding the monsters, not us.
Unfortunately, G. T. is my congresscreep. I've been calling him out for a few years now. He can find time to go to the Texas border and act all tough about poor brown people but he can't find the time to write a farm bill which is crucial to all of his constituents. He is a no show for town halls, rarely replies to my emails and never answers his phone.
All right, we give up. We don't live in your state, so we don't know who G.T. is. He does npt appear to be loved. Tell us his name, so we can dislike him too. In return, you can have our MTG. That would be Marjorie Taylor Greene. Take her - please!!
Thanks, Maggie. "Responsible" does not seem to describe him. We are sure we do not have to describe our own Georgia Peach, Marjorie Taylor Greene. But here goes: Bleached blonde blowhard MAGA bombshell, expert conspiracy theorist, and worshipful fan of DJT. Join us in looking forward to 2026 and throwing the bums out!
If more Americans were paying even a token of attention to what this administration and its sycophant republicans were doing to our country and democracy, then not a single Republican up for reelection would survive the midterms. That is, of course, IF we have a midterm election. Don't think that if it appears that Republicans will get slaughtered in the midterms that Trump will find some way to declare martial law and postpone or cancel them. Snicker at your peril.
I never understood how people can vote for critters who only help their rich donors, but millions of voters who didn't learn from trumps first term have elected a president who didn't learn from trumps first term
Continuing to blame us who've been relegated to that infamous basket of deplorables won't bring us back to the party that was once ours.
It's the Dem party elitists who haven't learned. First they converted to corporate lite. Then they dumped the New Deal, including financial regulations, leading to the Great Debacle of '08. Of course they bailed out Wall St. For the millions who lost jobs, pensions, homes? Nothing! Although the majority, we're unimportant; mere economic cannon fodder.
The attitude expressed by Sen. Chuck Schumer in 2016: "For every blue collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin." Not only morally reprehensible, but politically stupid. Shows us their only concern is retaining power. Seems the common good is passe' for the best and brightest.
That's a logical fallacy called deflection. A tactic to avoid dealing with issues raised. It's also whataboutism; ironic since that tactic was constantly used against H. Clinton by Trump trolls.
I was a rank and file blue collar labor activist for 30 years and a local Dem campaign mgr. I fought the takeover by neolibs (supporters of econopathy) decades ago and have done extensive research to corroborate what I've experienced first hand. What I'm saying is well documented--and the Schumer quotation alone is a big hint.
I'm also BIPOC and LGBT...in case you were writing this off as the ravings of some dumb bigot white guy. Who cares about those losers, right? That the Rust Belt, abandoned by the Ds, became opioid abuse central and now leads the country in deaths of despair is simply proof of their inferiority.
"...it's easier than taking responsibility" is a particularly heavy piece of irony. The D party and its admin. and professional 20%er comfortable upper middle class supporters are apparently still refusing to take any. Although recently there's been populist noise from party hacks like Rahm Emmanuel and James Carville.
Anyway, thanks for the reveal about how Dem supporters really think.
We admire your keen insights and the scope of your knowledge. But beware of sweeping judgements, friend. That is not how we think, though some of us may.
I realize I've made myself persona non grata here with my heavy dumping on the Ds and D supporters. Yes, that edges into something like assuming all white Southerners are racist. However, I feel obligated to object to constant deflection onto the Rs or Reagan or Trump as if Ds had no responsibility for the last few decades. Evidence of either a denial of their own shadow side (a' la Jung) or a profound lack of historical and economic knowledge at best.
At worst plain old class prejudice. Ask people in the service industries how we're often mistreated--and it's not only by snooty rich Rs. I can attest directly to three during D political events. So yeah, I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder about it. Also the reason I learned to write well.
It should be disturbing how the D party is perceived by many disillusioned and outright angry working class people: as elitist and uncaring. Remember, only 31% in the US have 4 year degrees, and that's in anything from anywhere. Therefore many are also de facto working class, a seldom acknowledged 70-80% majority. Which the Rs do their best to exploit. Recently, I was in a place where (ugh) Fox News was on in the background. There was a bit about how the Ds are, yep, elitist and uncaring. Of course it's phony. But when it's the only mention out there...
The Ds will either finally listen to what people like me say and return to actively fighting for the common good or they will continue to lose. I find that prospect terrifying.
Rafi, we understand perfectly where you are coming from. It is the way we feel about the party at this crucial time. "Democracy" (in Greek) means the rule of the people, not the rule of the wealthy and the educated. What happened?? We have been telling our lawmakers to stop sending fundraising emails that are all about how bad the others guys are, and start listening to the real needs of real people - and then act on what they learn. Can they learn? God only knows. All we know is that if they don't return to their roots (to use a platitude that fits here), like you said in your last paragraph, we are truly lost , and the damage will not be repaired in our lifetime, nor in many lifetimes to come. That is terrifying indeed. But for all that, we still believe in the good in people, whether they are R or D, and neither group can be judged only by what some of them say and do. Call us incurable optimists. It helps us get through the constant barrage of bad news, and we find some good news now and then. In the end, we may find that we have way more in common than we have been led to believe. At least we hope so!
Jim, despite my mother's command never to do so, I answer your headline question with another question: It depends. Is the farm bill intended for the country we were born in or the one it's become?
You express my concern eloquently and you point out the main reasons I am so concerned. I will be discussing these reasons with people in my community. I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts. Thank you!
Have you noticed how indifferent Trumpolini is to vast parts of America since he was elected.
Making life better for farmers putting food on our tables cannot be underestimated. They not only need to valued but rewarded for their service to our nation.Rounding up immigrants ,legal as well as illegal, placates his sizable hate following.

Glenn Thompson - he is known as G. T. He is Chair of the House Ag Comm. He is responsible for writing the Farm Bill.

MTG - your description is spot on. Keep up the resistance!

Oh please. Then let’s just keep playing the blame game… it’s easier than taking responsibility for voting for a convicted felon to run the country.
