I never cease to be appalled and disgusted at people (old white men, in particular) who have so much, and would deny so little to people who, by comparison, have next to nothing. Apparently, the trade off for being uber-wealrhy is loss of your heart.
My monthly health care premium tripled after trump canceled the mandate. I worked for a leader in providing health care for their employees but over 35 years costs multiplied 10 times as big corporations eliminated employee benefits. DeSantis said if you get sick you can just go to the emergency room but someone has to pay theirbills and the costs are passed on to people with insurance. All of the people forced off of medicare won't just go away and die they will go to the emergency room and what's left of people with insurance will pay higher premiums. Our health system already fails many people and it will careen towards failure like the federal deficit under the leadership of the most bankrupt person on the planet!!!

One point that the meanies miss in their thoughtless crusade for "must have jobs" is that many people who use Medicaid are self-employed. They have "gig" jobs or are independent contractors providing "day labor". How, exactly, are such people supposed to be able to document their hours worked? What about artists and musicians, for example? Landscapers? Child-care providers? Could this be the main reason that the Arkansas "experiment" with a "job requirement" failed so spectacularly? How can a self-employed worker document hours worked for some "employer" if a self-employed individual takes work assignments from many multiple customers? The entire oligarchy scheme is based on the assumption that Medicaid recipients should have some servile position with hours documented by some single "employer"; obviously, Medicaid recipients cannot be relied upon to provide an accurate accounting of hours worked--some other "responsible" party must certify the time-sheets.
Medicaid rules vary from state to state. Some states require documentation of income sources with some paper proof of income, such as W2 forms or pay stubs--the sort of requirements that MAGA Republicans want to enforce nationwide. For persons without an employee relationship with an employer, no such proof exists. Other states rely on different sorts of documentation, such as Federal income tax Modified Adjusted Gross Income, which obviously can include Schedule C self-employment income and other miscellaneous sources of income. A family farmer would report farm income according to IRS requirements in those states, because even a subsistence farm is a business and has business expenses that are deductible. I live in a state with MAGI rules based on tax returns where self-employment income is specifically allowed. So a family farmer would need to report any after-tax cash income from farming and, if that income was below some state-recognized threshold, the farmer would be eligible for Medicaid.
That may be part of why Arkansas Medicaid failed as it did, but also because the state made it difficult to comply, requiring documentation on line, which many residents don't have access to, especially in some of the more remote places in our state. Many recipients are also semi transient, in that they move a lot, often one step ahead of the eviction notices, thus are hard to find. But then, our Trumpian governess, Empress Sarah, has actively resisted one of the more basic health benefits, extending post partum care covered by Medicaid out to a year. We are the only state that does not have this benefit, to my knowledge. You can lump her in with the meanies as well. And she'll tell you how her Christian walk guides her life. But then, why should anyone who is not already a millionaire get any benefit from the state??
