This is a good time to point out how much we are spending for a ballroom, golden arches de trump,a really stupid war, lobster and steak dinners for pentagram pete, new jets for homeland security, weekly vacations at mar a lago etc. ... health care and support for seniors would be better than paying for gov. By the trump and for the trump
One addition, Pal. "For the trumps," plural. We shouldn't leave out the corrupt family cashing in on everything from Ponzi-scheme crypto to outright bribes, while a supine Congress watches and so-called Supreme Court justices take trips like they were the billionaires forking out the tainted dough.
One more honorable mention goes to the deterent of gov. efficiency but the grand prize winner has got to be trump's fantasy ads that ruined sunday football.paid for by the u.s. gov. A lot of millions for less than nothing, get that toddler a babysitter
I am a senior with a crumbled back--84 with scoliosis and severe spinal stenosis. I did all the right things--ate healthy, lifted weights seriously for 25 years, and purchased long-term care insurance before I turned 60. It covers "assisted living." In the interim years, through some kind of deal, I assume, with Congress and facilities that used to bill themselves as "assisted living," those same facilities, same services, same location, now call themselves "independent living," and my insurance will not pay. My husband, who died this year, was debilitated for the better part of the last year of his life. I applied for help from his long-term care policy and was, after months of paperwork, granted eight (!) hours per WEEK. This country doesn't give a damn about its seniors, and I'm tired of paying tax on my Social Security so tRump can tear things down. There. My weekly rant. Sorry.
Although a common D party defense, not so. The elite Ds were moving in the direction of dumping the New Deal in the late '70s. Probably reaction to the '71 Powell Memo. Those New Dems were pro-corporate, justifying it as cutting edge. Clinton got rid of New Deal financial regulations, a cause of '08. After which the Ds bailed out guilty Wall St. while the millions of us who lost jobs, pensions, homes got nothing. Besides, even if it were all Reagan's fault, why haven't the Ds done anything about this deeply inequitable econ system in all the decades since? Well, lists of their 1%er and corporate donors might be a hint...
You know, I often wonder when the religious right will start to follow the tenets of their own religion. Just to start, how about, love thy neighbor as thyself.
They've had a lot of time and plethora of opportunities to be the Christians they purport to be. It's not happening. People like Talarico, on the other hand, are a joy to behold. He's so right, but not rightwing.
Look up PRRI and Robert P. Jones, himself an evangelical whose new book is titled /BACKSLIDE (Reclaiming a Faith and a Nation after the Christian Turn against Democracy)/. In it is a chapter "The War on Empathy." Yes, really. TV preachers, megachurches, and defenders of rule by white Christian nationalists are calling compassion a trick of Satan to push believers away from their faith. The believers defer to authority because they want certainty. They also feel they should be among the rulers. How they managed to distort what Jesus taught into a battle for power and domination is the real trick. What else to call it but outright evil?
Thanks Jim. This crap is on par with the way our country has treated the minimum wage. Dehumanizing and long in need of an overhaul. I know about this firsthand, as my stepmom and her brother lived out the last year of their life in a tiny, poorly run Nursing Home in the backwoods of OK. Mom's blood daughter put them in there and it was a horror. Surely, we can get this one thing fixed!
Wow. When I was a case worker for the NYC Social Service System in 1968, all my clients were in nursing homes. The personal cash allowance for each of them was $15/month. It was horrendous then. $30 dollar/mo. is even more horrendous now. The cost of living has way more than doubled since then.
tuGreed and immorality have taken over the country! The only way to return our govt to the voters is to IRRADICATE money in politics Public funding is the only pathway to regain our democracy from oligarchy, corruption and the looting of the treasury.
There was a time when public funding seemed possible....the addiction to the trough of corrupt money may be too strong now, as supported by the oligarchy-loving Supremes.
a moving post, Mr. Hightower -- thank you.. And it reminds me of John Gould formerly of the Christian Science Monitor.. We needed to hear this information again -- and today was an excellent opportunity: thank you, again.
It's always been shameful the way our government has treated its seniors. Seems to me that they forget that someday they might find themselves in the same boat. Right now with all the current government corruption, wasteful spending projects, inflation etc the middle and lower classes have more than enough worries on their plates that the senior problems seem to fall by the wayside. We need to draw our state representatives into this problem and continue to brow beat them until we get a resolution. If we don't the situation only gets worse.
In MA when a senior goes to nursing home, or other care facility, and the person cannot afford to pay, the state puts a lien on the hose (if owned) and collects after death. In NV anyone wanting to apply for Medicaid must have NO ASSETS, including life insurance Cash it in. Similar for low cost subsidized housing
I'm 78 and mentally competent. However, I'm also very low income and trans. Neither trait conducive to an outpouring of care. The one "advantage" is if my carcass gets parked in one of those minimum places, I won't be kept alive despite my wishes since there's no profit to be made.
It's my own fault for not incarnating into a wealthy family. I also should have seen the wisdom of getting rid of Keynesian economics and New Deal programs. Along with deliberately outsourcing manufacturing, these neolib D policies have worked out wonderfully. Why both parties support corporate economics. It's my error for believing otherwise.

And yes, our demented president Saint Ronald Reagan started this. Damn.

Sigh. I concur on everything you said.
The powerful succeed in reducing even the meager scraps that common folks receive.

That is awful since millions or maybe billions are spent for golf, ballgames, flights, luxury dinners and ballroom on Trump and his enablers.
