That this is not part of "common Knowledge" is a crime in itself. I learned about Butler about 20 years ago in a broadcast by Jesse Ventura after his turn as governor. Butler is one of his heroes. We can add this footnote to the many other historical dramas, particularly the labor movement and voting rights, which are NOT emphasized enough. Mr. Hightower, thank you for your streak of honesty and rebellion. SD Auburn, CA

Thanks for this very interesting history lesson. All the more reason to have real, nonwhitewashed history presented to our kids. It’s way more interesting and enlightening. It might just save us from ourselves.

Amazing how history repeats itself when facts like this attempt coup are kept hidden from our history books. Big money is again trying to unseat a president whom cares for the lower and middle class workers. Thank you for highlighting this historical record for us!

Why isn't this taught in history classes? This is the first time I heard about it.

Note that Butler won not one but two Medals of Honor. And IIRC he wrote a book titled "War is a Racket."

"sealed off from our history books"...no surprise here. Gen Butler was a true hero

The 2022 film Amsterdam (director, David O. Russell) is loosely based on this coup attempt, but doesn't bring out all of the implications as beautifully as you do...

He went on to participate negatively in Nicaragua. You don't mention that part of his history.

A great introduction to our hidden history. So, what's up next: treasonous citizens submarining our government for political gain (Nixon and Reagan), false flags killing millions in our names (Vietnam and 9/11), conspiracies killing progressive leaders (JFK, RFK, Martin Luther)? Where's today's Smedley?

Maybe today's Smedly is General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I would like to see him become a candidate for president!

Don't know much about him, Ron (that's probably a good sign by itself). I'll have to read up on him. Thank you for the heads up!

I must have missed this one in August ,I’m glad to have found it minutes ago,I vaguely recall my Dad saying a little about it ,but it did stay with me.I looked for stories about it in my teens in the 60 s not much to be found.Could the war profiteers in The Nixon Days have been controlling the general public’s,getting the information it was and is a great piece of history and should have been a blockbuster of a story.

History repeating once again.Think the Great Trumpkin might embrace and twist this little hidden gem into an Orwellian conspiracy theory to somehow benefit his,21st century effort to do the same thing ? I would not bet against it,that Nazi ,bastard could convince himself and his minnions that .we lost,WWll,and we are all fighting against the true and righteous leader of that, outcome!

Thank you, Jim. It is not just the overblown sense of entitlement that the putsch planners exhibited that is disgusting, but the intention that down-and-out WW I veterans, victims of that very same sense of entitlement, should be…what? Hungry enough? Self-absorbed enough? Short-sighted enough to participate in an operation that was aimed at restoring a status quo that was meant to exploit them. Very much the same thinking behind the January 6th attack.

Heroes like Smedley Darlington Butler, we can be grateful, are still among us. I believe one can find them at work in such organizations as Vietnam Veterans Against the War and Veterans for Peace.
