What is it about Texas? Is there something in the water that infects people like Greg Abbott and turns them into blathering idiots? Seems like it must be infectious because people vote for him. Why did they vote Ann Richards out of office? Something’s wrong!
I am afraid it is worse than just a lack of hearing themselves. Bobby Azarian a cognitive neuroscientist who recently wrote about the Dunning-Kruger effect which is where "individuals tend to overestimate their level of intelligence, knowledge, or competence in a particular area. They may also simultaneously misjudge the intelligence, expertise, or competence of others. In other words, they are ignorant of their own ignorance." They don't know how much they don't know. Azarian, says these individuals "are attracted to confident leaders, so politicians are incentivized to be overconfident in their beliefs and opinions, and to overstate their expertise. For example, Donald Trump - despite not having any real understanding of what causes cancer - suggested that the noise from wind turbines is causing cancer (a claim that is not supported by any empirical studies). It is well documented that on topics ranging from pandemics to climate change Trump routinely dismissed the opinions of the professionals who have dedicated their lives to understanding these phenomena because he thought that he knew better."
Azarian says he has a new theory of stupidity - "that stupidity is not a lack of intelligence of knowledge, but a lack of awareness of the limits of one's intelligence or knowledge - . . . " Azarian says there is reason for hope, in that individuals can be educated to become more aware of their own ignorance.
When having their hearing they might also need to get their eyesight and reading comprehension checked.
The rethuglicans all claim to be Christians, but do just the opposite of what HE said to do. Maybe they are Bizzarro World christians. Or possessed by the devil.
Yes, Jim, you nailed it - “a tragic neurological disconnect.” It’s widespread (even to Shasta County, CA!) so maybe it’s caused by a weird Screwball Virus? Fortunately, most people have immunity. And you’re helping us keep up our resistance.
Sorry, Jim. I usually find myself in total agreement with you, but not this time. They hear the words perfectly well. The problem is that there's something wrong with the processing. They can't distinguish between sense and nonsense. The fix isn't hearing aids; it's something else, much less expensive, to be inserted in the ears. A pair of cherry bombs ought to do the trick.
I've wondered for a long time if there was some kind of neurological virus that could account for the recent right-wing idiocies. Perhaps this virus involves the auditory apparatus in their brain, with the result you describe so well. Makes perfect sense.

I think it must be all the oil fumes and bad water!
maybe the sun bakes their brains or there is radiation in the water.

Like the Mose Allison song goes: Your mind's on vacation and your mouth's working overtime..."

Sorry, Jim. You can't put their hearing aids on a constant loop. The 8th amendment doesn'tt allow cruel and unusual punishment. :)
You clearly point out the problem However, I think my father, doctor, had a better diagnosis:
Constipatio of the brain and diarrhea of the moutn,

Maybe your way is to enlighten people through humour........it would get my vote every time.
Americans it seems need a 'circus!'
What religion is Abbott? not one of the major ones who talk about compassion, love thy neighbor. He must be possessed by the devil.
Support for private schools is subsidizing the rich class? What's the point of having money if you can't spend it on the things you want?
