As a fifth generation Texan, I’m ready to flee this state. I live in the country outside of Austin. Most of my neighbors are very good folks and they are motivated by hot button issues of guns and abortion to vote Republican. We have guns which can be useful out in the country, yet we don’t glorify a gun culture, which repulses me. I do worry that some have become radicalized by all the hate rhetoric of the Republican Party and associated media. And I worry that I could be targeted some day due to my progressive ideas so I’ve begun to self censor at times. And who wants to live in such an environment?

I suppose I'm missing something but I absolutely don't understand how people like Abbott get into Office. The only thing I can think of is that they are financed by a bunch of rich right wing social

illiterates, which is the same group behind Trump.

I'm sorry...all true about the beast Greg Abbot, but your fellow Texans keep voting for him (Not to mention Cruz). Shamefull. On the other hand Jim Hightower you do the work of the angels:)

I used to say “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here fast as I could.” Now I’m appalled and ashamed of my adopted state. Texas has a long history of colorful (sometimes shady) elected officials, but our current heartless, clueless governor and his corrupt Lt. Gov. and AG have brought shame and disgrace to our state. Time for a change in direction!

Whew Jim! Thanks for the scathing expose. Abbott is just one of many of this brand of humanity, He is not alone. These demonic actions would not so easily happen if there weren't many others down the line "just following orders". Seems the time is overdue for the state legislature to develop a governmental fair and humane "Code of Ethics" top to bottom of the food chain and enforceable when necessary. Abbott's actions certainly provide a reason. I've lived in TX and love the people and the place. It is sad to see this cruel and farcical action by state government so often and easily played out against "the people."

The Governor is following the policies of the unawoke maga that resembles the National Socialist of 1920's and 1930's Germany and the Invisible Empire of the United States (KKK) in the same time period. It seems like a door from the "dark side" has opened.

Regarding the "...denial of water breaks for outdoor workers broiling under this year’s 100-plus-degree heat dome...", how many of their employers have actually implemented this?

Abbott is a tool and I generally agree with the substance of your comments, I doubt his goal was to kill thousands of Texans and migrants. Abbott clearly isn't aware of and/or care about the ramifications of these policies and - IMAO - is not too bright. But, he isn't a killer. Like I said, he's a tool.

If we had not stopped the wall being built these type of things wouldn’t happen and legal immigration would be the only way they could come to our country. I’m from another border state and the amount of illegal immigration’s is overwhelming and criminal activity has increased with violent crimes and the average person has to look over their shoulder all the time. Or become another victim.

I am close to giving up. It seems that human beings are no more civilized today than when they first became sentient. It's really discouraging.
