Jim, there is very damn little to smile about these days, but you have tickled my funny bone since the 1960s. Thank you for that. It helps me stay sane. Hang in there, my friend, and keep givin' em hell!

Has anyone mentioned to these folks that Moses was a Hebrew and that their sacred Ten Commandments aren't Christian theology at all but (oh my God) Jewish!!!

Jim, you have both credibility and historic background and I appreciate the knowledge you give us every day. You educate and affirm the truths that we believe to be so, but have to shake our heads constantly at the garbage spewed by the right. How can they be "right" when they are so wrong??? They should be called wingnuts or way over the cliffers, or just plain crazies.

Yikes! God save us from religious fanatics. What's next, the Islamic Republic of Texas? Islam started out as a religion, too, and broke up into narrow, restrictive, feuding sects, where each claims to have all the answers and neither one allows the separation of church and state. Texas, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Holy Moly…. Does this mean that because the Christian Nationalists in Texas have no problem ignoring the Constitution’s first Amendment, that we can now cast aside the Constitution’s second Amendment?

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA, HAD A SOLUTION TO THIS 10 COMMANDMENTS BUSINESS: THERE IS (OR WAS)M A PLAQUE IN CITY HALL WITH "HISTORICAL BASES OF SOME OF OUR LAWS." THE 10 COMMANDMENTS WERE THERE, AS WAS THE CODE OF HAMMURABI, AND SOME OTHER ANCIENT DOCUMENTS. BTW, ONLY PART OF THE 10C DEALS WITH BASIC THINGS LIKE MURDER, ADULTERY, THEFT, ETC. THE FIRST 4 ARE ALL ABOUT GOD AND HOW TO HONOR GOD.

NEVER MIND THE N.T.

Notice these alleged Christians seldom, if ever, cite the words of Jesus Christ as recorded in the New Testament. Too namby-pamby what with the cheek turning and cloak giving. And they're hypnotized by the worst parts of the O.T. usually taken out of context.

The 8 items of the Beatitudes, Mt. 3:5-12 like blessed are the peacemakers, the merciful? Oh-oh. Or MT 25:35-40 where feeding the hungry, letting in strangers, caring for the sick, and visiting a prisoner is the same as doing so for Jesus. But that's just coddling the weak and the guilty!

Even worse for those who claim to be literalists is Acts 5:32-35. No one claimed private possessions; everything was held in common. "There was not a needy person among them, for as many as had lands and houses sold them, bringing the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the feet of the apostles, and it was given to each as any had need." No rich exempted, none admired. No means tests for people in need. An obvious source of socialist and do-gooder ideas deserving censorship.

When asked what was most important, according to Mt 22:37-39, Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind. {Known to Jews as the Shema.} He said the 2nd greatest was to love neighbor as oneself, citing Leviticus 19:18 of Hebrew Scriptures. Love?! OMG! How does that fit with being dominant tough guys always certain about everything?

Here's to my hope that one or more of the currently striking writers use their "free time" to compile the next blockbuster comedic screenplay featuring this and so many other recent events in politics. It should be easy, as there's ZERO need to "make this sh** up", eh? ; o )

Mr. Hightower I delight in reading your columns. They are funny but to the point especially the wild Texans! It seems to me that Christianity in Texas is seemingly hypocritical because they embrace the weapons philosophy while claiming that God is on their side. Thou shalt not kill is one of the commandments. So, I guess in Texas it is OK to kill but God forbid you read about it.
