I declare the cranberry growers the winner (Isn't America all about winners & losers?) in the Thanksgiving Derby. They receive 28% of the retail price. Turkey farmers come in last, by a large margin, recovering a mere 1/4 of 1 percent. Ain't American capitalism grand?

Wishing all a safe & yummy Thanksgiving.

When the prices of eggs skyrocketed, it was another gouge. Back then there were 600 million laying hens of which 10 percent were lost to bird flu. A reduction of that MAGAtude did not warrant a 200-300 percent increase.

MAGAtude .... thank you for that! Ain't that the truth. And the raping that we're about to receive, Jesus, help us. Oh, I just remembered, Jesus is on THEIR side.

We got most of our meal from local farmers. Five pound roasting chicken from the people who raised it. We bought corn from farm market in season and froze most of it. Same with green beans. Got the apples in the pie from people who keep the orchard and the cream to whip from the dairy farm that sells its products at retail. Made biscuits and sausage gravy this morning with sausage from local farmer. I get cheeses from him as well. Various vegetables from his father. Yogurt made on the farm is a staple.

We still get some things at retail but mostly from the local IGA now in its 2nd generation of ownership and they have a lot of bulk items like rolled oats, nuts, grains, and beans.

I regret most of us are not as connected with farmers as you are. Thanks for going to the people who do the work!!!

Great info and reminder for city dwellers and those of us who live in timber country--all who seldom hear about farm facts. Thanks to all you ag folks; Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you for this edifying exposee. I have just finished reading Diane Wilson's "The Seed Keepers" and highly recommend it for many reasons - land use injustices, the anguished loss of family farms, the demise of traditional land conserving methods of farming, the snake oil sales of GMO seeds by Montsanto, and the value of ignored, discounted Native American knowledge, values and practices.

Looks like we should all eat more cranberries. The smallest rip-off of them all.

And just wait as the Trump Tariffs go into place. Once again American's and American farmers (even those who voted for Trump) will pay a very high price......

Honestly, I cannot wait until the economy goes to hell under the Orange Fuck. Every one of those fools who voted for that creature are gonna be squealing and I'm gonna love it! Unfortunately, I'm gonna be suffering too. GOD BLESS YOU JOE BIDEN.

Oh, I forgot that not EVERY one of those fools that voted for the OF are gonna suffer. There's plenty of rich guys and their wives that did so in order that they can reap huge profits and pay less taxes while destroying our earth and air. YAY! The wives that know they and their daughters can always get FULL reproductive health care in another state or another COUNTRY if need be.

As a kid a family could make a good living on a

Quarter section in

The Midwest and keep it productive. Today it seems to take 2000 acres, big loans, expensive equipment, thousands of gallons of chemicals, plus sn assault on the land and slavery to corporate America to support a family

Thanks for this information. This is capitalism gone mad!

I would gladly support a local farmer by purchasing directly from them if I knew where to find them.

I suppose they’ll say that the cost of transportation is the reason behind the huge difference in price.

Are the ratios of Retail Price to Farmers Share shown different now than they were when I was a kid 70 years ago?

It's cheaper this year than it has been since 2021. The over all trend is still up, so point well-taken.

The only recourse we consumers have to prevent being ripped off are the federal agencies which are designed to regulate against excessive price gouging. Now with Trump/Musk planning to defund these agencies, the profiteers will run roughshod over all of us.Americans resisist and desist from buying.

Right. Corporate greed, as you have mentioned. Niether Party does much about it. I think the D's proposed an anti-price-gouging bill and the R's blocked it, but I could be wrong.

If God or the Galactic Confederation put me in charge of America, farmland would belong to the families who farmed it, crop rotation rather than chemicals would be encouraged, boondoggles like gasahol and CAFO's would be banned, and the giant ag-business conglomerates would be broken up and their power destroyed. But that will never happen under neo-liberalist capitalism. The R's think greed is great, and the D's need corpo-rat money to campaign.
