Sorry to have to say it: this is nothing new in American politics. Herbert Hoover, the Republican who gave us the Wall Street crash of 1929 and the Great Depression that followed, got his job that way. And it goes way back to before him. We are in our 80's, and cannot remember a time when there was NOT plenty of talk about reforming the current system. But look on the bright side: 2020, the first full pandemic year, showed the strength and spirit of the common people. Against great odds, we defeated the third-worst president in U.S. history. Keep spreading the word, Jim: we can do it again!
THE problem is that they DO NOT EARN THIS "GOLD" it was given to them by who knows who? but we can keep trying & trying & trying, as least they will or should be--- DEAD by this time-----sure hope so.
The US really is NOT a Democracy it's only about control and greed.
It would be a good idea if US Elections took a maximum of 8 weeks. Network time and ads only up until 1 week before the election. Each party has the same amount of money to spend.
The minute a President gets the job then the whole circus starts again!
I feel for the people constantly being bombarded with ad's and letters asking for money and having to endure more than a year of this nonsense.
Geez, I think I remember when this crap wasn't ongoing. Back in the day, a candidate went on TV with his message. The opposing candidate was allowed air time for his message. And TV wasn't making any money off these messages. Then, BOOM! Someone decided if the candidates wanted to "advertise" they needed to pay. And that's when all this BS started Citizens United and I think another decision before that started the flood of money. And here we serfs sit, waiting to see who will be the next feudal lords we can choose from. Glad I'm as old as I am!
Citizens United MUST BE OVERTURNED. This horrible decision by the SCOTUS treats corporations as citizens (which they are not) and allows unrestricted donations to campaigns. Since 2010, the “race” for the Presidency is a race to see which candidate can raise the most money and get the most advertising bang for the buck. Absolutely anathema to Democracy. This horrible decision MUST BE OVERTURNED to restore some semblance of balance and Demoscracy.
I blame John Robert’s for the stupidity to endorse Citizens United. What a load of crap. It should be called Citizens Divided. Those w the most money and influence write and support laws that only protect to wants of the wealthy and corporations. The rest of us be damned. DISGUSTING!
JennyStokes, I AM one of those bombarded people. I give to the candidates I feel will try to make a difference. I research and read and go listen and donate what I can. I am a retired teacher (from Texas, so money IS an issue for me). I see money winning every time, and to say I feel duped is an understatement. Before I became a teacher I spent 27 years in the Air Force and I have been places where people can't have any say in their governance...so not trying is not an option. I donate and I vote, though nonsense it is.
Great Lowdown! Spot on! Wish it weren't true! Goes all the way back to our elementary education. Values are something which must be learned, and a difficult problem to solve. Wish I had a good answer.
Knew a whole bunch of people in the past, that polite folk would never have over for dinner.Myself, I try not to think of folks harshly or to be a jerk by type casting someone without any reason or in general,it’s not nice.Political people are the exception to this rule.My GPa John Henry was a good guy who broke his ass in the Cape Breton coal mines back in the 30s ,he was a Barry Goldwater ,Republican,Iuse to write letters to the paper’s editors for him when I was a kid in the 60s. He was an astute man in his own time but he only had a 4th grade education, and was embarrassed by his lack of education and his inability to compose a decent letter,I will say he taught himself mathematics and algebra, helped me and my siblings greatly, but composition wasn’t his thing.I’m not a whiz myself, but he trusted me at 12 yrs old to be his ghost writer.During the Nixon years he was a rock solid Archie Bunker clone, the letters I wrote for him to The Record American newspaper got published quite Often though I didn’t agree with the things I wrote for hi.m but, at 13 I was proud as all hell to be published ina Big City newspaper, the point I’m trying to get to is John Henry and I disagreed vehemently about the subject s of one of the most controversial and divisive times in American history upto that time, but we were respectful of each other’s opinions and we agreed to disagree, him 65 ,me 13 ,if a man is able to be magnanimous and civil with a 13 yr old boy who has no real life experience in the political sphere,1969 was a hell of a time my life was just getting going,Nam,Nukes Nixon , NASA!Spiro Agnew Christ ,didn’t know whether to shit or go blind, then the insanity of now seems to be an enormous waste of my faith in humanity being able to act like the good people,I was taught to respect ,regardless of the differences between us.If John Henry was alive today I think he would be ashamed of The people who represent his beloved GOP.
Both Parties depend too much on big donors, and the most rabid of the base. Public financing of campaigns and a total ban on PAC's , or at least on anonymous money, would help a lot. But like old Strom Thurmond said,"it's mighty hard to get a hog to butcher hisself." i sometimes think the Army should have stepped in after Jan 6, tried all the rethuglican who tried to stop the election for treason, and hung them all. That would still leave the almost equally crooked and ideologically hidebound dim-ocrats; but it would be a fine start on "draining the swamp", as the chief reptile put it.
How about we choose an Independent Party Candidate on a write in ballot with a Living Solutions Platform and let the greedy go from paper work purgatory on to money hell

Democracy in the U.S. is guided by the "golden rule": He who has the gold, rules.
Wish I could disagree. JJY

At a minimum, we need a list of the billionaire -selectors who attended the candidate -runway event.
Is there any wonder why some people say they don’t vote when they see what citizens United has done to the US?
In the good old USA,we have the best government,$$$ can buy.And we all now know who owns them and whom they serve....It aint us...for sure.

Nothing new here. It's always been a case of lords, vassals, and serfs.

Like one of my hero's, Geo Carlin said many times "don't vote folks it's just a waste of time".
