Ain't capitalism wunnerful? You can get rich enough to buy the newspapers so they won't criticize you, and rich enough to buy the government so it won't control you. Smells like fascism to me!
As a career newspaper journalist, now out of the game, I can relate to this. Perhaps our only hope is employee-owned news organizations, nonprofits, run for the common good. It's easy to be cynical. We need to go beyond that and rebuild a real, honest and adversarial press. We are suffering the lack of it.
The takeover of all "news" media by the Aristocratic Overlords (i.e., the billionaire class) is part of their strategy to turn America into a Feudal State. There is three things the AOs are doing to establish Feudalism: 1. Pay off the government representatives (huge campaign contributions and hire lobbyists to spoon feed voters which lies they can get away with and how to use culture war and people's prejudices to fool voters into making them think their lives will be better, while the aristocratic overlords are grabbing more and more of the fruits of peoples' labor. 2. Stack the Supreme Court with demagogues who are tied to right wing dogma (Citizens United case, destroy the long standing president of Roe vs Wade, dilute voting rights, etc.). 3. Control the "news" media to keep the truth hidden. "When money speaks, the truth is silent." - road sign in Thailand
NY Times & Washington Post here did report this June 5th protest, but the whole context of Gannet's conquering & ultimate purpose was identified by very few voices like Mr. Hightower's.
Thank you so much for bringing this to light Jim and HL staff. This suppression of journalism is practically all that citizens are left with given that few know how to access critical information such as you are so desperately calling our attention to.
The sad part of this is that when people are deprived of their local news source, they have no idea what’s happening in their communities, either the good things that positively impact their lives, or the bad things that negatively affect them daily. Nor do they know who was responsible for these actions in order to keep those responsible in office.

I'm honored!
I wish the staff and employees of Gannett all the success they can find. I like newspapers and they work as a psychic anchor in the morning.

Thanks, Jim!
Hedge funds own a lot of our healthcare system, so why not our news groups? I think we need to reconsider what "Regulations" can prevent!
