Oh, how they danced. Around the real issues, around the elephant who was NOT in the room, and around what they would actually DO if elected - besides tearing down all the foundations of democracy, of course. Scary!
I agree with you completely. I did not watch the debate because I’m fed up with this bs. That these dwebs are what big money is buying, count me out. These guy and gals all suck.
Well said, as usual, Jim. This is the course that the Citizens United decision has set us on--Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, and even John Marshall must be spinning in their graves.
Another reason to end the Supreme Court's decision that corporations are people and can contribute any amount of money to political candidates. Need to change this decision.
The 2010 Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United vs FEC case effectively blocked the ability to enact limits on campaign spending. The Citizens United decision opened the floodgates to the billions of dollars that have since poured into the election system, enabling those with access to concentrated wealth to have vastly more influence over our political system than the average American.
Jim, you have hit a very large nail on the head. No one who has any intestinal fortitude or core morals would subject themselves to what the "party" bosses and media want a prospective candidate to 'DO' to get a major party nomination.
Vivek Ramaswamy is a great talker. & says stuff that sounds good. Being in a pack of hacks who can only dredge up their past (mediocre "accomplishments" all in the service of "the state" NOT the We the People) - a tried and true hack pack so to speak - hand Vivek that magic space to go full sound bite on steriods.. But...Ramaswamy is fully armed with the standard hack ware - big buck supporters who have "needs". Seems no matter what he says he will be beholden. Isn't that just another hack in the making?
What did Vivek say that “sounds good?” Climate change is a hoax? Trump is the greatest president of the 21st century? I agree he’s “a great talker,” but he has nothing to say. Glibness and wisdom are two different things.
we need campaign financing reform. $ 25 or $50 maximum contribution for each election cycle. we need our elected officials to truly represent us. we need term limits for all elected officials, even the ones I admire and support. The 'GOP' clowns are the result of no control of election financing!
We also need Civics/Government to be taught in our schools. I had it (I'm 81 years old, However) The only "education" the public gets is watching these "debates" and the lies and misinformation that is spewed.
Thank u for the lowdown Jim. I have had such a bitter taste in my mouth about Texas the last few years, but due to your substacks I believe there are really good Texans out there. I have hope again. Donna
I announce a new (no doubt, God-given) right of we Homo Sapiens: The Right to Remain Ignorant--you got it--if one cannot find the utter BS in that sad Performance ( from denial of human climate disruption to "let's shoot illegals crossing over here to paradise" ...to "OMG universal health care as commie plot to take our doctors away"...)so may we then be led by the craftiest by the nose to wherever they will take us.. You have the right to remain ignorant, don't fret none just vote for me.
Did anyone else notice the extreme irony of the huge banner above the candidates - DEMOCRACY 24?
Republicans don't support democracy, if they did they wouldn't continue to oppose statehood for Washington DC and reform of the Electoral College system. Not to mention gerrymandering and voter suppression.
I thought I'd do my civic duty (seriously) and watch some of the so-called 'debate' and learn something about the Republican candidates. I managed about 15 minutes, only to learn how vacuous -- save for a brief N. Haley moment -- they all are, that is, when they're not demonstrating huge, empty egos.

Except I think you meant 'these guys and a gal . . .', I agree with you.

Got THAT right!

"more akin to mud-wrestling" mini biography: rampaging ego, etc
don't get no better than that.....you be the man !

Another home run from Hightower! So refreshing to hear it told JUST the way it is! Carry on Jim!

He's another Elon. Doesn't care what he says. He's now in the public eye.
There are few things more dangerous than an educated derelict.
YUP!!

I’m the same age; civics was required to graduate high school. What happened since to cause it to be dropped?
Dumbing down of the American mind.

As Gordon Geckko had said -- "Greed, for a lack of a better word, is GOOD!!!" It's ALL about the "Benjamins!!!"
I rest my case.............
legalized bribery by billies* is still theft of democracy...[billie=billionaire as slang]
