There are so many worthy nonprofits in all areas of life that it makes you wonder if society's priorities are properly aligned. Why do we have hunger and homeless people? Why do we have an economic system that creates hazardous conditions for our health? Why is it that there is a conflict between our natural resources and what is considered progress? You get the idea.
Because the Gross National Product is based on how quickly and cheaply the Natural Resources can be harvested and sold. Life is in the way of the corporate greed and corporations are not alive and are not real people.
And a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of y'all, too! This is wonderful reading. The best part: it only scratches the surface of all the good that is done by groups too numerous to mention. Incredibly thankful for all of them!
This is a tremendous roundup. Next year can you solicit suggestions in early November? I like to donate on Giving Tuesday when many orgs get a boost from matching funds. It’s the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Thanks for considering.
Also, please note the passing of David Atwood in houston. He has been a strong advocate for decades for causes such as Texans Against The Death Penalty , Janitors for justice, homeless issues, and an active member of Pax Christy , catholic peace group @ https://paxchristiusa.org/
HOW ABOUT Physicians for Social Responsibility for addressing the causes of climate change and their solutions/alternatives and getting rid of nuclear weapons.. everywhere....now before it is too late..!!!!!
Thanks for this comprehensive list—so many worthy groups doing good work! Sibling stations of KPFA include WBAI, where I cohost Eco-Logic, and 3 other Pacifica stations. As Larry says, society’s priorities are pretty screwed up to need all this private assistance, with too much of our federal budget going to military expenditures and corporate welfare. That there are so many groups may be a sign that We the People are ready to stand up for ourselves and each other.
The examples provided in this piece on which organizations to support are superb. Love all the local organizations, as well as national ones that are critically important for holding elected (& unelected) officials accountable. A few nonpartisan organizations that come to mind, in addition to the investigative reporting from Mother Jones, include Public Citizen (https://www.citizen.org/), Common Cause (https://www.commoncause.org/), and Union of Concerned Scientists (https://www.ucsusa.org/).
My nominee is YES! magazine, founded by alt economist David Korten. Who was (and still is) committed to diversity. He emphasized articles about practical examples where alternative local practices (especially indigenous) for ecol, econ, and medicine are successful. As well as where dialogues between youth and seniors, between different races or ethnicities, and with labor organizers have led to real progress. The younger people running the magazine currently are committed to the same.
Karri Matau and Angelique Leone who head The Community Foundation of Snohomish County Washington work with a select group of non-profits who embody diversity, equity and inclusion in their Community Organizations. The CFSC strives to help make a better place for us all.
